Turbyfill Technique
The Turbyfill Denture Technique for optimum fit and function
The development of what is today known as the Turbyfill Denture Technique was begun more than a half-century ago by Dr. Earl Pound and perfected by Dr. Walter F. Turbyfill. It is a unique method for custom-fitting dentures to an individual’s mouth. What makes it unique is that it is the only method that takes into consideration and utilizes all of the functions of teeth—speech, mastication and facial shaping—in the fitting process over time.
Conventional dentures are fitted from a single impression of the gums on the patient’s upper and lower jaws. However, this yields just a “snapshot,” a frozen moment, of what the shape of the interior mouth is. In real life, subtle changes in shape occur depending on whether the patient is at rest—lying on his or her back or front or side—or is up and active, smiling, talking, laughing or chewing.
The Turbyfill Technique is the only fitting process that scientifically accounts for these changes by taking precise measurements and making a series of functional impressions over time using an impression material that sets over a period of days rather than minutes. This is done by providing the patient with a provisional denture filled with the impression material to wear for an extended period. The provisional denture is made of the same materials as the permanent denture and provides an aesthetically natural look, and the denture and the impression material are comfortable to wear.
This fitting process involves a series of refinements by the dentist over a period of weeks until the optimum fit is obtained. It does require multiple visits to the dentist’s office, but the results are more than worth it—dentures that fit your mouth precisely, that are tight and feel comfortable, and that look as natural as your own teeth.
